People still have a mass misunderstanding of the purpose of forms. In Shuai Chiao we have forms as a device to train techniques on your own without a partner. I.E. Covid times. This serves well for learning new techniques and then helping others remember them. In Long Fist the traditional forms help you develop unbelievable flexibility. I would say even more so than Taekwondo (and I did that art for 3 years). Add 2-pound wrist weights to your wrists and ankles, they tone your body. Then, when you know how to Sanda at the advanced amateur level you develop your own forms. These teach you your combos, what you would use in a fight. It has to flow with your body and come naturally. This is why the developing of your own shadow boxing/form is a martial art on its own. This is where you develop your own fighting style based off your traditional style and then it becomes your Kung Fu or modern Kung Fu, both would be correct. Of course, throughout this time you need a stellar teacher to guide you. Thank you, Master John Wang for all the years of teaching. You never asked to be called Master, I did on my own.
